“A Thawed Reflection” 2025
A 12” x 36” painting , mostly acrylic, on canvas. There is also some ink, pencil and colored pencil used in the painting.
This piece started with a unconfirmed story I heard about the Mayans using water lilies to sense if their water source was good for drinking.
The Story of this piece is about a Afro-Latina woman processing her emotions through journaling. Not only is she able to thaw and unblock stagnant emotions, but she is also able to tap into some of her distant mayan heritage.
I wanted the piece to be dreamy, slightly surreal, poetic. I wanted the all of the symbols to connect and create a connected Narrative. Just like the ice contains a shape, the story holds its own shape.
